Humboldts Klangwelten – Workshop und Abendgespräch mit Ricardo Lorenz

Das Akademienvorhaben „Alexander von Humboldt auf Reisen – Wissenschaft aus der Bewegung“ lädt zu einem besonderen Doppeltermin rund um Alexander von Humboldts Klangwelten ein. Der Komponist Ricardo Lorenz (Professor of Music Composition at Michigan State University) zeigt am Nachmittag in den Werkstattgesprächen, wie sich Humboldts Reiseberichte in Klang übersetzen lassen und welche Rolle akustische Perspektiven für sein eigenes kompositorisches Arbeiten spielen. Am Abend fragt er gemeinsam mit Ottmar Ette, inwiefern Humboldt bereits als früher Pionier einer "Acoustic Ecology" gelesen werden kann: Ausgehend von Humboldts Reisebericht Relation historique (Personal Narrative) diskutieren sie die Bedeutung von Hörereindrücken und Klanglandschaften in Humboldts Schreiben sowie ihre heutige Re-Inszenierung durch Komposition und KI-Technologien.

Interpreting Humboldt’s words and translating them into sound: what is gained and what is lost in the process?

Composer Ricardo Lorenz discusses how his personal interpretation of Alexander von Humboldt’s travel writings led him to musical collaborations with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and with Venezuelan sound artist Alonso Toro.  He will share audio excerpts of these collaborations and invite an open dialogue centering on the challenges that arise when Humboldt’s words are turned into art.

HUMBOLDT LISTENS: Alexander von Humboldt and the Birth of Acoustic Ecology

Was Alexander von Humboldt the first acoustic ecologist? In this event, Ricardo Lorenz (Professor of Music Composition at Michigan State University) will show how the famous naturalist engaged with the tropical environment by relying not only on his sight but also on his acute sense of hearing.

Following a brief presentation, Lorenz will join Ottmar Ette, Director of the long-term academy project "Traveling Humboldt – Science on the Move", for a discussion on the role of sound in Humboldt’s writings. They will also explore how collaborations with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Venezuelan sound artist Alonso Toro deepened Lorenz’s understanding of Humboldt's sonic world and led him to recreate some of Humboldt’s soundscapes using sound and A.I. technologies.
